Captain's Log

30/09/05
Don't know if any of you are going to 'In The City' in Manchester this weekend but The Captain will be in attendance, mooching about pestering people. Come up and say hi if you dare! If anyone has any suggestions as to which unsigned bands are worth catching, let us know - this year's a blank canvas as for the first time in 4 years we don't know any of the bands that are playing. As for who should be playing (but aren't) we nominate The Scaramanga Six whose fabulous single "Horrible Face" is out now. Buy it even if you haven't heard it 'cos we say so.
Oh, and whilst we're on the subject of fabulous; has anyone been watching Medium with Patricia Arquette on Tuesday nights? Ace tv!

Quick, it's getting late, need sleeeeep! The Album is now for sale on NotLame, the world's foremost powerpop site - check out their glowing review here. Also, the Captain has a gig lined up at The Vine for November 7th (they're coming in thick and fast since playing the Open Mic gigs). More details as we get them. Yawwwwnnnnn, time for bed...

Ok, there's been a slight change of plan! The gig has been put back a week til Saturday 14th October. Oh well, you've waited all this time - another week's not going to hurt now is it? Oh, and following hot on the heels of this gig is one at The Primrose on Thursday 27th October at 10pm. More details to follow...
Whilst we think of it, if you're not doing anything this Saturday (24th Sept) try and get down to the Brudenell Fundraiser, which should not only be a great night (Samsa are one good reason to be there), but it's for a worthwhile cause, ie raising funds to keep the Brudenell open.
Finally, another reviewer has been doing some investigative journalism for Diskant E-zine which amongst other things says we're "...tighter and more inventive than most of all those big indie guitar pop bands that Captain Wilberforce is so reminiscent of." - fair comment!

So here we are then, site updated - what d'ya think? The navigation is a little less cryptic and we've kept the 'quick to load pages' (ie all basic html) so checking out all that the site has to offer is a lot easier than before. We've put 6 songs on the melodies page for your delectation; 3 from the new album and 3 from the demo, and you can download or stream them - either way it's a doddle.
We've had one of the strangest reviews ever from subbaculcha ezine, (The reviewer reviewed his own detective skills basically), but The Captain has to admit the chap might be on to something...
Another open Mic night was given the Captain Wilberforce experience this Monday: Carpe Diem, Calverley St was the venue and The Captain's musical reserves were somewhat stretched, belting through 4 songs on the night. Needless to say a sit down and calming cup of tea (6 sugars) were needed afterwards.
Which leads us on succinctly to news of a proper acoustic gig in October. Fri 7th October since you ask, first on at 'Tea Time Shuffle' at The Hi Fi Club. The full line up is Stateless + The Hair + Nikoli + Ric Neale + Captain Wilberforce - It's £5 on the door or £4 in advance from Jumbo Records in town (You can buy another copy of the album for a friend whilst you're there!). We look forward to seeing you there...

The site's going to be getting a bit of an overhaul in the next week or so, so if any of you have any suggestions of things you'd like to see (within reason and good taste!)- let us know. Fingers crossed, when we've finished the site will be a bit more streamlined, easy to navigate, but still with our erm, distinctive style!
Were hoping to get some new pics up, give a bigger range of songs for you to stream and add to our links with some more bands we like (and think that you might!).
'Til then mon amis, adieu!

Getting the hang of it! Three more acoustic shows under the belt, one (Wed night) at The Grove, and two (Thurs night) at The Primrose. Of the two, The Grove has a folkier feel and no amplification: you're on your own! The Primrose is an indie venue with ahem, a younger crowd, (There's a PA and sound engineer too!) but both venues have a great atmosphere. The Captain is planning on making return visits in the next few weeks if you're in the area...

The Captain is live! Yep, last week there was a sneaky appearance at an acoustic open mic gig at The Grove, in Leeds. Due to the tumultuous applause following The Captain's two song 'set' (Vaselined Eyes and Excuses), there's a good chance more of the same will be happening over the next few weeks... We also happened across Roger Davies, who is worth paying good money to see!
A Very British Earthquake has fought its way to round 3 on Garageband and at the time of writing has a 5 stars from the 30+ reviews it has had. We're reet chuffed.
Got another review, too, though AntiMusic.com only like the second half of the album and think the first half is too pop. Pop is what we are! There, we've said it, now can everyone just accept there's no shame in it and move on? Plus of course the reviewer thinks the lyrics of Teaching You To Swim are like, really about 'teaching someone to swim'. -10 Reviewer points from Slytherin, we think...
One last thing, Jumbo Records in Leeds are now stocking the album, so there's no excuse for all our friends, who keep saying they'll get round to buying a copy soon, to go out in your lunch breaks and spend spend spend. There are no excuses! See you at an acoustic night near you (Unless you're from anywhere outside England, in which case you may be in for a wait!)
