Captain's Log

26/12/04
Hope you are all having a splendiferous festive season, with an abundance of company, cds and calories - we're wrapped up warm against the excesses of the winter chill listening to The Polyphonic Spree and re-reading Bill Bryson's "A Short History Of Nearly Everything", (which we think deserves to be a set text in every school seeing as how it's so breathtakingly good.)
A month; okay, just over a month has flown by since we last spoke. Drums have been recorded, lyrics have been written and we're pretty much on track for getting an album out before March. The only thing we haven't done is play live, which is pretty annoying as we've been looking forward to it. Anyway finger's crossed we should be doing a couple of warm up acoustic shows in the next two weeks. As they're going to be pretty low key affairs we'll let you know about them by posting on the site on the day of the gig.
We got played twice on Cielo Liquido, so thanks to Fernando, and we've also had a review of some of the tracks for the new album at The Beat e-zine, which is worth checking out. Anyway, remember to bookmark us if you're interested in the acoustic gigs and we'll see you there!

The Captain occasionally goes on internet expeditions which take him to some interesting places. We got an email back from him this week ordering us to visit ballbearings pinatas dot com. Who were we to argue? Seems like he hit gold - it's worth the admission for the Ariel Pink song snippets alone (poptastic DIY toons, one and all)!
Not only that, he sent us to the link to Jon Brion's brilliant video / song Here We Go. Jon has scored some incredible films including Magnolia and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind as well as producing lots of bands, but he also writes great songs as this video proves.
We don't just spend our time link chasing though. New songs for the debut album proper are evolving all the time. Expect it'll take us 5 times longer than we're anticipating, but it's happening!
Lastly, but far from leastly, Spanish radio station (available on the net) Cielo Liquido is going to be playing some of the Captain's new songs from Nov 22nd. We say, support your local Spanish internet radio station - you know it makes sense.

Quick update. A new selection of mp3s has been uploaded and you should now be able to stream them (If you've got broadband, sorry to all you 56k-ers out there, but we're not technical enough to sort that!). Also the lyrics are coming along, albeit as slowly as the last half hour of work on a Friday afternoon.

It's that lyric writing time again. That would explain the headaches and violent moodswings. Actually, we've already got one sewn up, with the provisional title 'Singer wanted: Preferably Dead', but darn it, when the tunes are flowing it's sometimes hard to keep on top of the words!
Anyhow, recording took a bit of a backseat last week when our splendid drumming monkey blew a gasket. He is currently recovering, convalescing and moaning quietly to himself so can everyone please send him their best wishes telepathically.
More Garageband news. 'Vaselined Eyes' is now well into the second round of reviews and still has a chunky 4.9 / 5 star rating. Had some nice comments too from reviewers round the world. It's hovering around the 80 mark out of 1270 songs in the Alternative chart and looks set to make another leap up in the next few weeks.
Currently number 1 in the alternative charts are the really rather ace Kunek who have 3 songs in the Alternative top 20, all of which owe a pretty heavy debt to Thom Yorke and Co, but are none the worse for it. A good song's a good song, eh?

Things to look forward to:
1. A change of songs to download v. soon
2. Streamed Mp3s (The Captain's getting his technical hat on as we speak)
3. Live acoustic gigs (yeah, we've said it before, but it really is on the cards, honest...)
4. Christmas (yippeeee!)

Ah Garageband, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways...
Number 1: Vaselined Eyes has been picked as the Alternative Chart's 'Track Of The Day' for Sunday 10th October.
Number 2: It currently the song has a 5 / 5 star rating
Number 3: I've come across a bunch of really good bands whilst reviewing including the afforementioned Zillionaire, plus Reddbird, Greek Embassy, Die Pilot and The Horror, The Horror. So long may The Captain continue climbing the charts...
The new technicolour photos are here. Hoping to have some pics of us doing the recording of more songs up by the end of October. Bet you just can't wait!
