Captain's Log

23/11/2003
Where has The Captain been over the last month and a bit? Locked in a small studio with nothing but cheese sandwiches and ginger beer? Exploring hitherto uncharted regions of time and space? Asleep? Well, all of the above really, and more... We're dead proud to announce we're now a Managed Entity. Step forward Diane Wagg at Deluxxe Management. Without question the best manager the planet has ever produced, The Captain is ridiculously chuffed. Anyway, with another mini album's worth of tracks written and due for completion early in '04, things are looking Hunky Dory, or at least Ziggy Stardust. As for the last bunch of songs, check out the newest REVIEWS at Brainlove and Logo Magazine. Finally, as MP3.com is going the way of the Dinosaur / Video / Gareth Gates soon, captainwilberforce.co.uk will be a self-contained site with mp3s, news, pics etc in the very near future. The Captain is only an email away, 24/7. Trust in him!

Crikey, The Captain knows a great gig when he's been to one, and in fact he's been to two. It goes without saying that Blue Sky Band were awesome at In The City - by far the best band we checked out all weekend. There was a healthy turnout and loads of Industry types with ITC passes draped round their necks in an 'I'm terrifically important' fashion. The Captain also saw Misty's Big Adventure at the Royal George in Digbeth, Birmingham and had a night of revelry and song not witnessed since that memorable incident in Prague in '26. No words will suffice, so pop along to mistysbigadventure.co.uk (Oh, the cartoonery) Keep up at the back...

Designer Mag have updated their site with a Captain Wilberforce review and just to clear up any confusion we're NOT playing In The City, but we are popping along to sample the atmosphere... (Supporting Blue Sky Band in the cheering and whooping sense!)

At laaassst! We'll be geting an 18 track machine to play with in the next couple of weeks (Cheers Howi!) which will mean mucho intensive recording. The Captain already has many c90 tapes chock full of tasty idea-lets, just waiting to become fully fledged songs - oh, the antici.........pation. In the meantime, check out www.killingfantasy.com (online fanzine) who are going to be reviewing the cd and hopefully interviewing Captain W and his crew in the near future. Oh, almost forgot, we're all having a three day working holiday at In The City next weekend, schmoozin', liggin' and generally poking fun at all the ponytails. And most importantly supporting Brum's own Blue Sky Band. See you there...

For that ace debut review (we mentioned earlier) in full go to roots-and-branches.com (or our links page) And there's more. Working in conjunction with the 'In The City' music convention, Designer magazine (see our links page) will be reviewing The Captain's work in the next couple of weeks. So far they've had this to say: We've already a sack full of demos for possible inclusion in our "Best Of In The City" feature and out of those we've listened to so far it's the following that are standing head and shoulders above the rest.
* Capitol State
* We Start Fires
* October Motorcrash
* The Bardo
* Captain Wilberforce
* Collen
* Noise Candy
Fingers crossed, there will be more of this kind of stuff in the not too distant....

More feedback on the songs...No, we don't mean we're standing too close to the amps; the Bliss/Aquamarine fanzine got in touch having listened to the tunes on mp3.com and demanded to hear more. More, they said, forcefully like. How could we disappoint? 7 songs were dispatched by The Captain, post-haste and the result is the inclusion of 2 songs on the next Bliss/Aquamarine compilation. The website is blissaquamarine.net - We suggest you go there, sharpish like.

It was far too hot to do anything over the last few days, but things were done anyway. That's how dedicated we are. As the Captain says, more work, less sunbathing. The first e-mailout has been a spectacular success - I mean you're on the site reading this, aren't you? We're also proud to present our debut review - only a snippet here, but as soon as The Captain gets the link he'll post it on the links page..... "Incredibly confident and accomplished, alluring, evocative and hypnotic, it's a tantalising glimpse of what lies ahead. When I heard the last set of demos by Theory prior to their demise, I reckoned they stood a good chance of securing a 2003 album of the year. The prediction remains, only the name has changed."

Having written and recorded a bunch of songs over the last two months, we decided to see if anyone other than us cared. This is the result - let us know what you think, the more feedback the better. Unfortunately top Leeds combo 'Mama Scuba' have nicked the VS1680 we were using to record, so all our luvverly new songs are sitting around pining for the fjords. Just wait 'til we get it back...
